easy

  • 1 baguette, preferably Vietnamese-style (light and airy)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 ounces Vietnamese ham (Cha Lua), thinly sliced
  • 4 ounces roasted pork (Thit Nuong), thinly sliced (optional)
  • 4 ounces pate (optional)
  • 1/2 cup pickled carrots and daikon (Do Chua)
  • 1/4 cup cilantro sprigs
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced cucumber
  • Jalapeño slices, to taste (optional)
  1. 1Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, and black pepper. Set aside.
  2. 2Slice the baguette lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  3. 3Spread mayonnaise generously on both cut sides of the baguette.
  4. 4If using pate, spread it evenly on one or both sides of the baguette.
  5. 5Layer the Vietnamese ham, roasted pork (if using), and any other desired meats onto the bottom half of the baguette.
  6. 6Drizzle the prepared sauce over the meats.
  7. 7Top with pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro sprigs, cucumber slices, and jalapeño slices (if using).
  8. 8Close the sandwich and press gently to compact the filling.
  9. 9Cut the banh mi in half or into desired serving sizes.
  10. 10Serve immediately and enjoy!
