Serves: 8
medium
- 1 box (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts
- 6-7 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 tablespoon milk or cream
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
- 1Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- 2In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly.
- 3Line a 9-inch pie plate with one of the pie crusts. Trim and crimp the edges.
- 4Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust.
- 5Dot the top of the apples with the butter pieces.
- 6Top with the second pie crust. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- 7Trim and crimp the edges of the top crust to seal it to the bottom crust.
- 8Brush the top of the crust with milk or cream and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
- 9Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, cover the edges with foil.
- 10Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
