Serves: 8

medium

  • 1 box (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts
  • 6-7 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
  1. 1Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. 2In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly.
  3. 3Line a 9-inch pie plate with one of the pie crusts. Trim and crimp the edges.
  4. 4Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust.
  5. 5Dot the top of the apples with the butter pieces.
  6. 6Top with the second pie crust. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  7. 7Trim and crimp the edges of the top crust to seal it to the bottom crust.
  8. 8Brush the top of the crust with milk or cream and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  9. 9Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, cover the edges with foil.
  10. 10Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
