Classic Tiramisu

A classic Italian dessert made with coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cream, and cocoa powder.

medium

  • 1 1/2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 1 package (3 ounces) ladyfingers (savoiardi)
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 pound mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  1. 1In a shallow dish, combine the cooled coffee and coffee liqueur (if using). Dip each ladyfinger briefly in the coffee mixture and arrange in a single layer in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. 2In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until light and pale yellow, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. 3In a separate bowl, beat the mascarpone cheese until smooth. Gradually add the mascarpone to the egg yolk mixture and mix until combined.
  4. 4In another clean bowl, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture.
  5. 5Spread half of the mascarpone cream over the ladyfingers. Arrange another layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers on top of the cream. Spread the remaining mascarpone cream over the ladyfingers.
  6. 6Cover the tiramisu and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. 7Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu generously with cocoa powder. Cut into squares and serve chilled.
